Solihull Moors 0 Coventry Sphinx 3
IT was a very different Solihull Moors who took to the field for this Birmingham Senior Cup 3rd Round match against Coventry Sphinx from The Midland Alliance League.
Long term injury recoverees Gary Birch and Andre Francis were in the starting line up with several youth team players given a chance.
It was a chance also to test new players Lee Dunkley and Jake Brown. Between the sticks was goalkeeping coach Darren Acton while Tom Kemp played his first game since being injured against Bradford Park Avenue.
However Solihull had to wait until 20 minutes for their first meaningful attempt on goal, when Dean Bennett’s 20 yard shot was saved by O’Neill.
They then wasted two corners in quick succession before, on 36 minutes a Sphinx shot wasn’t cleared allowing Matt Bannister to hit a looping ball over Acton for their first goal.
Solihull started the second half with Omar Bogle on for Jake Brown and the home team began to threaten with good moves down both flanks.
But then with half an hour remaining, Coventry broke and a direct hit on goal was first parried and in the ensuing scramble, twice cleared off the line before the ball was bundled over the line.
Moors tried in vain to claw their way but any real hope vanished when Sphinx hit on the break and Bannister fired a fine goal to make it three.
