Old Silhillians 4 Newtown 1
THE Old Silhillians secured promotion to the West Midlands Premier Division with this result.
The Copt Heath-based club managed the feat with three weeks of the season still remaining.
The first half saw Sils stroking the ball around their defence and midfield with great composure, creating chances almost entirely at will.
Captain Matt Fell opened the scoring with a drag flick into the roof of the net.
Not to be outdone, top scorer Jamie Glynn quickly followed suit, dispatching a trademark drag flick from a short corner.
Sils’ man-of-the-match, former Welsh international Elliot Goulding, then scored his first goal for the club.
Sils were obviously looking to add to their goal tally in the second period, but a breakdown in their normally excellent passing game allowed the visitors a breakaway goal.
But the hosts quickly returned to their excellent passing game, and veteran Mark Dovey found time and space at the top of the D to fire a clean strike through a crowd of players into the bottom corner to restore the three-goal lead.
With promotion secured the Old Sils can now concentrate on the National Knockout Competition.
The Sils are the only Midlands team still in it, having made it to the quarter-finals.
