Village 1sts 1 Silhill 1sts 2
GOALS by Joe Constable and David Icke and a brilliant man-of-the-match show by left-back Justin Perry earned Silhill 1sts only their second victory over Village 1sts in the 21st century.
In front of their expectant home supporters, Village FC put out their strongest side on the day, brimming with a confidence that reflected their position of second in the Premier Division.
Yet, with the benefit of a settled side, Silhill 1sts have improved in defence and midfield over the past month. Against Village they did give away freekicks in dangerous positions, but defended those set-pieces as expertly as they did the corners. What is more, Sils’ diagonal crossfield balls have become far more effective and incisive.
Concentration was etched on the faces of Sils’ hands-like-flypaper keeper Andy Masters and his rock-steady back four crew of Perry, Tommy Smith, Karl Rogerson and Steve Powell in a pulsating and enthralling clash.
In the 40th minute, playing some lovely football, Constable broke down the right wing and crossed in to James Lloyd: he returned the pass to Constable, who lashed in from close range past Village netman Stephen Maguire.
On 70 minutes, Village’s experienced leftwinger Mike Robbs provided a telling assist to their unmarked striker Matt Wood, whose unstoppable close range header equalised for 1-1.
A lesser team might have buckled but not Silhill, who battled back to reassert their lead. Their reward came in the 81st minute, when outstanding playmaker Steve Powell supplied Icke.
Icke’s long-distance dribbling run sliced through the Village defence like butter. He then completely bamboozled Village goalie Maguire with a daisycutting piledriver which simply fizzed past his ankles into the far corner of his net.
This Saturday, Sils host Premier Division leaders Sutton United 1sts.
