Shirley Athletic are flying high in the Birmingham and District AFA Premier Division, after hitting Handsworth GSOB for six, and casting Sutton United to their first league defeat so far this season.
Shirley faced a double header of big games as they aimed to push themselves further up the league, and their first game was up against an undefeated Sutton United side, who were sitting confidently atop the table and were despatched 1-0 in a tense game, a Tom Daffurn goal reducing the leagues front runners to their first loss this season.
Athletic were without several key players for the game and were also without regular manager Paul Curran, so Ross Crathorn stepped in as caretaker.
Many will be wondering if he will come into an assistant managerial position at the club after he led Shirley to a dramatic win with Tom Daffurns low header the difference between the sides.
Shirley’s second game was against Handsworth GSOB who were sitting a place above Athletic.
They were also sent home licking their wounds, after goals from; Joe Mobley, Tom Daffurn, Matt Whitehouse, Joe Cole and a brace from Richard Learnihan left them looking at a 6-2 scoreline come the full time whistle.
Shirley Athletic will now look forward to a heavily congested final run-in with 11 games to fit into the next four weeks as they look to push themselves up the table with one eye on the promotion race.
