The race for top spot in the South Birmingham Sunday League went down to the final game of the season as Hockley Heath Dynamos and Redwood fought it out on Sunday with Dynamos only needing the draw to take the title.
And with 90 minutes on the clock and the score even at 1-1 they looked like they had done enough to collect their second silverware of the season having beaten Redwood in the Jeff Hall Shield last month.
However a controversial penalty decision, less than a minute before the end robbed them of the glory and sent Redwood into raptures as they knew there was no coming back for Dynamos after that. Chris Allsop had sent Hockley into the lead on 23 minutes but Simon Campbell had evened up the scoreline for Redwood before the half hour mark.
Both teams had their chances in the second half but Redwood could not get that all important goal until a penalty was awarded for hand ball against Mike Walters who had chested the ball down from a header in the area.
Leon English stepped up to convert to give Redwood the honours for this season with the ref blowing for full time seconds later.
But the battle between the two teams hasn’t ended yet as they still have to meet in the final of the Len Ward Trophy on May 27.
