Shirley Athletic march on in junior cup

Shirley Athletic 1 Renewal FC 0

Shirley Athletic 1 Renewal FC 0

The rain nearly got the better of this BCFA Junior Cup fixture but nevertheless it went ahead.

The conditions were not the best and it was Shirley that started the better but throughout the first half, like in recent weeks, the final third is Shirley’s biggest problem. Poor crossing or final ball and shots on goal seemed to be the undoing of good approach play. On three occasions, Renewal threatened but keeper Adam Cotterill was alert enough to keep the visitors at bay.

Shirley dominated the second half more than the first and it seemed ‘divine inspiration’ was protecting the Renewal FC goal.

A change in formation for Shirley seemed to up the pressure on Renewal in the final third. Man of the match Matty Shaw saw his effort hit the post, Stuart Kempson’s effort was cleared off the line and the Renewal keeper was being called upon more and more. Finally the breakthrough arrived 10 minutes from the end when Mike Mountford drove the ball through the keeper’s legs to score his second in three games. Shirley saw out the game to progress to the next round.

Shirley are again at The Sedgemere this Sat vs Athletic Sparkhill - kick off 2pm.
