ATHLETIC paid the penalty for their lack of commitment in this third round BCFA Junior Cup clash.

A squad of 15 players at 11pm on Friday had dwindled to 11 by kick off but despite this the team that took the field was more than capable of competing.

Shirley had the lion’s share of the play in the first half but lacked a clean-cut opportunity, while Cadbury’s relied on the counterattack, which nearly paid off but for a point blank save from Adam Cotterill, supported by Shirley 2nd teamers Paul Houghton and Steve Bickley.

Athletic missed a penalty then, two minutes before half time Cadbury got on the scoreboard.

Still Shirley competed, although too many shots were from long range, before five minutes from the end, when piling forward, Shirley were caught with the sucker punch.

A valiant performance from Shirley, who now travel to local, and fellow strugglers Wake Green on Saturday. Kick off 2pm.
