Silhill 1 Wake Green 3
IN a 1-1 first half at Sharmans Cross Road on Saturday, Silhill displayed an immense energy and workrate yet lacked quality in finishing. Then fatal defensive lapses allowed the visiting Shirley outfit to net in the 70th and 79th minutes and seize the points, thus completing a 5-2 AFA premier division double over the Sils.
Wake Green took the lead 14 minutes from half-time when Johnny Baker’s hit and hope into the Silhill box finding Khiry Sawyers who made no mistake.
Yet, in the 39th minute, Silhill were back on level terms, Tom Sutheran smashing in a 25-yard curler.
Then on 70 minutes when Silhill failed to clear a loose ball in front of their net Wake’s Matt Beard stabbed it home off the post for 2-1.
With Silhill wasteful in front of goal the visitors bided their time and when Silhill’s centre half Keith Conway dallied too long on the ball Sawyers latched on to it to score his second goal.
On a disappointing afternoon for the home crowd, Silhill’s man-of-the-match award was shared between the all-action duo of rightback Martin Byrne and their centre midfielder and team captain Darren Lea. With three fixtures remaining, they are stuck on 26 points and looking for a minimum of 30: the previous Season they finished on 25 points.
