Silhill back from the brink for three precious points

SILHILL surrendered a 2-0 half-time lead at Sharmans Cross Road yet still emerged victorious in this AFA Premier bottom five battle royal against Nav Ashraf’s strong side.

Sils’ welcome returnee Steve Powell was rampant in the first half, winning unwinnable balls and firing numerous rocket shots at Handsworth’s giant and seemingly octopus-armed glovesman Mark Crosby. Yet it was Steve’s namesake Lee Powell who broke the deadlock in the 19th minute, before David Icke picked his spot to sidefoot in the 2-0.

A different Handsworth emerged for the second half and quickly cut the deficit before levelling.

Things were looking grim for Silhill, a team in desperate need of three points.

The situation called for men of courage, and in the 77th minute the two who stepped up to the plate to save their team, and possibly keep them in the Premier Division, were joint men-of-the-match heroes Darren Lea and Steve Powell.

Lea whipped over a stunning banana corner from Sils’ left and Powell celebrated his birthday with a bullet header that was to win the game 3-2. Never-say-die Handsworth strafed Andy Masters’ net in the closing stages, twanging his crossbar on 85 minutes. Yet Silhill held out with a quite magnificent team performance to preserve this vital win.

On Saturday they play Village 1sts at Sharmans Cross Rd, kick off 2.30pm.
