Silhill clinch frantic junior cup tie against Shilton

TOMMY Smith’s Silhill 1sts expunged the grim memory of their 4-3 reverse last year against Shilton on penalties with a 4-3 home triumph in normal time in the third round of the Saturday Junior Cup.

Playing the off-side trap well, Silhill took the lead on 21 minutes when leading marksman Ross Jackson capitalised on an awesome run and cross by Scott Tanser to rifle in a superb shot.

However five minutes later John Brophy equalised for Shilton as Sils waited in vain for an offside flag that never came.

In the 32nd minute Jackson’s cross found the head of Steve Powell, who has scored only in Cup competitions this season, to make it 2-1.

On 38 minutes, Silhill’s Richard Atkinson was brought down in the box but Jackson, blinded by the low sun, lifted the spot kick over the bar.

On the hour Jamie May made it three before Jackson got his second on 74 minutes for 4-1.

Shilton hit back through Tom Smith and then scored a third through Robbie Ross setting up a breathless last five minutes which saw Atkinson hit the righthand angle of the visitors’ net and a Shilton goal ruled offside.

This Saturday Sils are back in cup action, this time the Birmingham & District AFA Senior Cup Round 2 at home to Wake Green.

The visitors scored six when they last visited Sharmans Cross Road and it promises to be a pressure cooker of a local derby. Kick off is 1.30pm.
