St George’s Warriors 4, Silhill 3

St George’s Warriors 4, Silhill 3

AWAY at the famous old Hollyfields, ‘Gas Officials’ Social Club in Erdington, where Silhill won their first trophy - the Junior Cup - 2-1 against Cresconians 2nds in 1952, Silhill 1sts were squeezed out 4-3 by high-placed AFA Premier Division St George’s Warriors after staging a magnificent fightback in the last quarter-of-an-hour.

Sils went behind in only the second minute then saw a Jamie May equaliser ruled offside in the 25th minute.

Sils were 3-0 down by half time prompting a raging interval team talk by Tommy Smith which paid dividends as the visitors upped the pace.

Their reward came when a mazy run by Keith Conway saw him smash the ball into the net.

However a fourth from Warriors looked to have snuffed out the revival. Then Jamie Rathbone was brought down in the box; he duly dusted himself down, stepped up and fired home from the spot, In added time Tommy Smith got the third, the match ending as Silhill poured shots and headers on the Warriors’ goal.
