Inter Vaughans 2 Shirley Athletic 4
AFTER being on the wrong end of a 2-1 defeat two weeks ago, Shirley had a full squad to seek revenge over their local rivals in this AFA Premier tie.
Even though Shirley were the better team they ended up being 2-0 down. Despite this they continued to dominate, especially with Man-of-the-Match Mykey Price being a constant threat.
Price’s speed caused problems throughout, and it was his cross which was handled in the Vaughans’ box, giving Shirley the opportunity from the spot. Shirley’s newly found penalty king Matty Whitehouse dispatched coolly.
Again, a period of pressure resulted in Vaughans’ stand-in keeper only parrying Price’s effort into the path of returning Shirley legend Mike Mountford to tap in.
Vaughans relied on the counter-attack, but rarely troubled Shirley keeper Adam Cotterill. Shirley though, didn’t make Vaughans’ keeper work too much either, as last ditch tackling broke up Shirley’s approach play.
Shirley introduced debutant Stuart Kempson and Tom Craine, both having an immediate impact on the game.
The move of the match featured Matty Whitehouse, Mike Mountford and Mykey Price, whose series of one-twos resulted in Price finishing neatly. Soon after, a Craine effort was parried again, and Price finished from a tight angle.
A deserved win, and a squad that’s looking promising.
