Shirley Athletic 3 Wake Green 0
THIS AFA Premier fixture proved a game of two halves, and two goalkeepers.
Wake Green will rue missed chances throughout a dominate first half, but Shirley goalkeeper Adam Cotterill also kept Shirley level by half time with a string of fine saves.
Wakes push for an opener in the first half, possibly resulted in their eventual fatigue.
The second half couldn’t have been more different from Shirley’s perspective. Finally playing football and keeping possession, they brought out the best of the Wakes keeper who kept Shirley at bay for long periods.
Athletic made the breakthrough with 20 minutes left when Tom Craine picked up the ball wide left.
He cut across field avoiding half-hearted challenges, before striking from 20 yards and finding the bottom left corner of the goal.
With 10 minutes on the clock remaining, Wakes found their second wind, and although they never made Adam Cotterill save, they were not far from finding the target.
Wakes finally ran out of steam, and in a goalmouth scramble, the ball rolled across the Wakes goalline for Tom Craine to tap in.
Much needed win, and an unchanged team to boast too.
