Wake Green 1sts 2, Silhill 1sts 3
A golden goal four minutes from the end by Justin Perry earned Silhill this crucial victory away to local rivals equally mired in the SFS Premier relegation quicksand.
Silhill had been behind twice, yet fought back with sheer grit and determination to win the day. The result avenged Wake Green 1sts’ agonising 1-0 injury time winner by Mark Cartwright at Silhill. Accordingly Sils 1sts now require a point from each of their six remaining fixtures to preserve Premier Division football at Sharmans Cross Road next season.
In only the fourth minute, a fatal lapse in the visitors’ defensive concentration allowed Wake Green’s left midfielder Chris Hole to score.
Two minutes into the second 45, Silhill’s Tommy Smith put a glancing header past home stopper and former Silhill player Lee Garghan.
In the 61st minute, Wake Green’s Mark Cartwright rattled in a hit-and-hope, to restore their lead 2-1.
Sils’ grim plight called for a hero, and five minutes later Silhill Reserves’ skipper David Icke became that man.
He sliced through Wake Green’s midfield and defence like butter, he even played a couple of neat rebounds off their shins before rocketing a deflected cannonball shot from outside the box past Garghan for the 2-2.
When Darren Lea’s freekick was flicked on by his centre back Jamie May with four minutes to go, flying Scotsman Justin Perry competed courageously with Garghan to lash in the awesome 3-2 winner.
Man-of-the-match for Wake Green was their tall, quick and skilful centre back Dwight Henry.
