Two time European Tour winner Andrew Sherborne took the spoils at the 2011 Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship shooting an impressive three under par over two days of incredible golf at Nailcote Hall, Warwickshire.

The 50-year-old, who now competes on the European Senior Tour, thrilled crowds on a dramatic final day of the championship. At the start of play Carl Mason and David Dixon led from overnight but fell away leaving a three horse race between Sherborne and European Tour stars Simon Wakefield and Seve Benson.

At one point Sherborne held a four shot lead over Benson and as the latter’s challenge faded, Wakefield laid down a late challenge needing a birdie to force a playoff but hit his shot over the green on the 18th. Crowds went wild as winner Sherborne collected the largest prize on the UK PGA Circuit, an impressive £15,000.

Sherborne was delighted, shooting rounds of 55 and 50 on the tough Cromwell course

“I dropped shots on the last two holes but I wouldn’t want to swap the first 16 holes,” he said.

“I was only four behind and that’s nothing in any round of golf let alone here where the holes are so difficult. You can hit slightly too long, take a hard bounce and you have a double-bogey. I managed to avoid the double-bogeys today.”

Sherborne, a regular on the Seniors Tour, admitted he has tackled the tricky Nailcote Hall holes before: “I think I finished joint third one year and last the next – but that’s the sort of course it is.”

The Norma C Herd Silver Salver awarded to the leading amateur at the championship went to South Staffs youngster Aaran Rai.

This year saw the introduction of the new Super Seniors prize fund with £5,000 going to the leading professional over the age of 60, Dennis Durnian shot an impressive two over par to claim the prize.
