Balsall Common's Matt Clinton wins Wyre Forest CRC 28 mile trial despite flat tyre

BALSALL Common’s Matt Clinton made a dramatic start to the time trial season winning the Wyre Forest CRC 28-miler on Sunday despite riding with a flat tyre for the last four miles.

As the fastest man on paper, Clinton, who rides for Mike Vaughan Cycles (Kenilworth) was last man off in a field of nearly 50 riders.

But passing several riders starting minutes ahead of him, it was clear by the end of the first lap that he was flying round.

At the second lap there was only four miles to go when he punctured. Luckily he was running tubular tyres, so he continued to push on, albeit with a view to staying upright.

“It was scary hitting the descent with the flat rear. I was hitting around 35mph with a kink over a bridge at the bottom,” he said.

He finished in 1:03:40, still minutes ahead of the eventual second place.

Clinton now looks to defending his Beacon RCC Little Mountain TT event, a 45-mile hilly time trial in Worcestershire in two weeks.
