Barons squeeze home against Blackburn

Blackburn Eagles 4

Blackburn Eagles 4

Solihull Barons 5

SOLIHULL Barons held on for two points at Blackburn on Saturday as the Eagles swooped late in the hope of stealing the points, writes Gareth Thomson.

With an eye to bringing through as many young players as possible, Barons coach Darren Bellerby had called up a number of players from the Solihull Knights Under 18s, including 17-year-old George Garbett pulling on a senior shirt for the first time.

It was the Eagles however who hit the netting first with Chris Allen quickly equalising.

Five minutes later Richard Slater put the Sheldon Jewellery Centre Barons in front for the first time.

Allen then made it three and youngster Dave Rogers scored the fourth.

Erik Bakalar netted number five, however at the other end of the ice, Blackburn were taking their opportunities well, clawing back three goals.

By the final buzzer the Barons had however squeaked the win and managed to give many of their youngsters some good senior level ice time.

The Barons next take on newly crowned league champions the Nottingham Lions at Hobs Moat on March 24. This will be a highly charged fixture with the Barons still in with the chance of clinching second place and with it a promotion play off place.
