Solihull Barons 5
Coventry NL Blaze 4
A 600-strong crowd saw the Sheldon Jewellery Centre Solihull Barons see off the challenge of Division 1’s Coventry Blaze in a West Midlands ice hockey Challenge Cup game, writes Gareth Thomson.
The Blaze’s Josh Nicklin opened the scoring on nine minutes before being pegged back by the Barons Neil Adams. Coventry regained the lead just before the first break, Dale Buckland firing a speculative shot into the Barons net.
The second saw goals for Neil Adams for the Barons and Coventry’s Josh Nicklin, while Phil Lee, a month shy of his 47th birthday, brought the Barons back into contention with a short handed goal.
A minute from the end of the period Dave Rogers gave Barons the lead. The Blaze looked to have earned a draw when Rhys Gillett netted five minutes from the end, only for Rich Slater to fire the winner into the Coventry twine a minute later.
The Barons now have two weekends away against Fylde and Hull before returning to Solihull ice on December 9.
