RENAULT Solihull Barons delighted their largest crowd of the season in a nail-biting clash against Newcastle Vipers on Sunday.
The top-of-the-table league match was seen by over 850 spectators, who witnessed a physical and exciting encounter at Solihull Ice Rink.
As an added bonus, Solihull lad Jon Eley - who is one of the top speed skaters in the world - dropped the puck in a pre-match ceremony to kick off proceedings.
League leaders Newcastle were shocked to go behind after just two minutes when Richard Slater slotted home.
Newcastle, who were proving their reputation as a very physical team, gave a penalty away for roughing the Barons power play - Luke Thomas scoring the home side’s second goal. The Barons soon went three up, when Alex Jones scored in the 19th minute.
With thirty seconds left in the period, Newcastle pulled a goal back on a power play. But the Barons went further ahead in the 36th minute when Lui Brindle scored to take it to a comfortable 4-1.
In the final period Newcastle threw everything they had at the Barons - but it wasn’t quite enough. The home net minder was playing at the top of his game and did well to only let in two goals and help secure a valuable home win.
* The Barons next home game is against Sutton Sting on January 31 (Sunday), with two-for-one tickets available on the door.
