HOT and gusty conditions made for a difficult day out for Balsall Common’s Matt Clinton as he took on Coventry CC’s 10-mile time-trial last Saturday.
Held at Princethorpe near Rugby on a course that Clinton (riding for Mike Vaughan Cycles) uses regularly for training, a strong tailwind out on the ‘straight mile’ towards the A45 helped bring speeds up for the opening leg, yet turning onto the A45 a gusty crosswind hampered efforts.
Turning back up the A45 from the Fosse roundabout, the wind did not make going any easier. Taking another turn at the M45 roundabout, it was a fast run back to the Blue Boar where it was back down the Straight Mile to the finish, driving now into the headwind.
Clinton pulled past the line in 20 minutes one second, disappointed with the ride as he’d clocked 19:59 on the same course two weeks ago for training.
Yet the conditions had obviously played their part as second placed rider (Jon Simpkins, Drag2Zero) had come in some 54s down on Clinton, while third placed Alistair McChesney (Solihull CC) was 1m10s off the winning time. Putting the times into perspective, Clinton did a fantastic time.
An early rise on Sunday morning had Clinton line up for the North Road CC 70 mile event near Luton.
However he missed the break and with it well and truly gone it was just time to get some quality miles in the sun.
