Two gymnasts from Shirley have achieved amazing results in competitions over the last four weeks with both winning Individual Apparatus titles at the British Gymnastics National Grades Finals in Walsall recently.
Abi Stokes aged 15 and a pupil at Light Hall and Sasha Richards, 12 a pupil at King Edwards, compete in national competitions all over the country and have won 16 medals in the last four weeks including nine Golds.
The girls, who are members of Elena Rhythmic Gymnastics Club in Oldbury, train three or four times a week.
However Abi’s proud dad Richard said the girls were keeping their feet on the ground.
“Abi’s probably in the top 10 to 15 in the country but it is very difficult for our girls to compete internationally,” he said.
“There is no money in the sport it’s entirely self-funded by the parents and there is no way they can take on countries like China who pour millions into it.
“Our girls just do it for the love it.”
Rhythmic Gymnastics has proved one of the hits for the London 2012 Games and more information on the sport is available at www.elenargc.co.uk
