OLTON travelled to Surrey on Sunday to face Oxted in the third round of the English Hockey Association Cup on Sunday with a depleted squad with several key faces unavailable.
Oxted who play in the Eastern equivalent of the National Conference are languishing towards the foot of their respective table,
Olton on the other hand are working their way up the Conference North having gone five games unbeaten and are 4th in the league.
Despite starting the brighter of the two sides, Olton found themselves a goal down after the home side intercepted the ball in the Olton half and attacked in numbers down the middle of the pitch to convert from close range.
Five minutes later, Olton responded positively and equalised in similar fashion to Oxted intercepting the ball deep in their own half and counter attacking quickly up the middle of the pitch.
Many of the Oxted players were caught appealing while Olton progressed up the pitch for Angus Grieve to equalise from close range.
Again despite Olton enjoying most of the possession and despite having numerical advantage with the Oxted team down to 10 men, the home side retook the lead and held onto their grip until half time.
In the second half, Olton emerged again as the brighter of the two sides and won two early short corners, the first was saved well by the Oxted keeper but the second proved too complex for the home side to defend.
Daniel Sulway converted a well worked move which saw the keeper with very little chance from close range.
In what turned into a tasty 10 minute spell, Olton were reduced to 10 men with Chris George being sin binned for a reckless, off-the-ball challenge, however, this wasn’t enough to break down the visitors defence in what was an intense period of Oxted pressure.
Olton weathered the storm and found a late winner after Sidhu and Waters combined to set George up for his third goal of the season. Again Oxted placed pressure on Olton in the remaining minutes, but Olton held strong to win the game and progress into the fourth round of the HA Cup.
Olton will face Chelmsford in the 4th round of the cup on the November 21 hoping to at least equal their achievement in the same competition last season.
