Duo clean up on the water

TEENAGE sailing sensations Tom White and Maria Gidley have become Midlands Youth Champions for the highly sophisticated National 12 dinghy class for 2010.

TEENAGE sailing sensations Tom White and Maria Gidley have become Midlands Youth Champions for the highly sophisticated National 12 dinghy class for 2010.

Tom, aged 18 and Maria, 14, have been cleaning up the silverware at Solihull’s Olton Mere Sailing Club and this year they moved on to compete at Midlands open meetings in the N12, winning three out of five events. As a result they became both the overall and youth Midlands Champions.

Tom’s boat was a bit of a wreck when he took it on and was rather aptly named ‘Le Shed’. But, helped by father Steve, he restored the boat with Olton Mere club chairman, sailing legend Roger Angell, making a new carbon fibre mast to give the boat some competitive edge.

To get a glimpse of what all the fuss is about, visitors can see see Tom and Maria in action this Sunday, September 26, at the double handed regatta at Olton Mere.

All are welcome to come down and watch the racing which starts at 11am and runs all afternoon. Entry is off the Warwick Road.
