OLTON and West Warwicks CC travelled to Sutton Coldfield for the first match of the season, hopeful of achieving promotion from the Warwickshire Cricket League to the Birmingham League.

With four new players hopes were running high as Olton asked Sutton Coldfield to bat first.

However, an opening partnership of 30 by Smith and Wright proved to be the biggest stand of the day and ultimately the match winning performance in a low scoring match.

Captain Sunil Vyakaranam dismissed Wright with the score on 30 and Sutton then collapsed to 36-5 before a stand of 20 between George Gibbons and Lee Thomason took the score to 56-6 before another mini collapse made it 64-9.

Then 12 more runs were added by the last pair and Sutton Coldfield were all out for 76 with Vyakaranam taking 8-31.

Olton began disastrously and were 6-2 at tea and shortly after 7-3 and never really recovered with wickets falling at regular intervals especially to leg spinner Mark Guest who took five wickets and Olton were dismissed for 70, six runs short of the target.
