Theo Wasserburg, 17, has qualified for the national finals of the British Youth Championships - to be held at Sheffield from May 1-3 - after winning the West Midlands Under-18 Foil championship. Coached by top British fencer Rhys Melia, Theo also won the Jubilee Foil Competition in Hereford and was runner-up in the Under-17 Leon Paul Junior Series in Scotland.

Tom Sheppard, 14, is also heading for the finals after clinching the gold medal in the Under-14 Epee Cup at Packwood Haugh in Shropshire.

Matthew Tyler, 14, who is trained like Tom by the school’s fencing coach Raph Aldis, came tenth in the West Midlands British Under-14 Epee championship.

Steve Thompson, head of fencing at Solihull School, said: “We are delighted with our fencers’ success and wish them all the best in the national finals.”
