Olton & WW 2
Bowden Hightown 4
THERE was no doubt that Bowdon could be beaten this week.
Just three minutes into the game Pascale Massey put Olton in the lead. Both Pascale and Flora Peel two of the youngest players, who were returning from England training days made an impact up front.
A strength of Olton is also its experience, shown in the second goal after seven minutes in from a penalty corner routine.
In defence Julie Stowe and Amie Hone found creative ways out of a high Bowdon press. It was the strong defensive play from Stowe and Laura Price that acted as the foundations to go forward with confidence.
Meanwhile, Team GB player Sally Walton was kept out of the game by some strong tactics from coach Bateman and some great bravery by captain James.
However, in the 31st minute Walton was able to set veteran ex-GB player Tina Cullen up for a crisp winner.
A second half change of tactics from Bowdon broke Olton’s rhythm and from a key short corner. Olton saved twice but couldn’t stop the eventual goal. Seven minutes later Walton broke free and scored to put the visitors ahead for the first time.
Olton were awarded a penalty flick which gave them the opportunity to draw level, but sadly it hit the post.
Minutes later Bowdon were again clinical to make it 4-2.
The opportunity to remain in the Premier league may now be out of Olton’s hands, but with some good results the play-offs could still be avoided.
On Saturday they play Sutton Coldfield in a crucial local derby.
l Olton’s Mandy Gatherer has been selected for England Over-45s.
