It's a Shaw thing as Solihull rider clinches National Youth Omnium Championship

Solihull Cycling Club has welcomed home its new National Youth Omnium Champion in the shape of 16-year-old Lucy Shaw.

The competition, which was held in Reading, saw the cream of the country’s youth track cyclists compete across five disciplines on the velodrome.

The first race was the Individual Pursuit which is Shaw’s favourite event and she didn’t disappoint – dominating her heat and in so doing setting the tempo for the rest of the competition.

In the Kierin event, made famous by Chris Hoy (where riders sit behind a motorbike or derny before unleashing a killer attack), Shaw was confident of her sprint and waited until the derny pulled off when she accelerated and comfortably came round on the last bend to take the win.

The Devil and Scratch races also saw very confident performances from Lucy.

By this time it was a case of Shaw holding on to her overall lead and making sure any likely contenders would not take points from her.

Finishing second was enough in these races for Shaw to win overall and claim the title by a significant margin.

Lucy was presented with her prize by Hannah Barnes, of MG Maxifuel Womens Racing Team who claimed the National Circuit Champion title this weekend.
