Jockey is fined

AN attempt at cheating by a jockey at Warwick races last week cost him dearly.

AN attempt at cheating by a jockey at Warwick races last week cost him dearly.

Richard Oliver, an Australian, was fined £500 for weighing out light, after riding the unplaced Fajer Al Kuwait in the opening race, a one-mile claimer.

He discarded some of the horse’s tack, including the girth, before getting on the scales, apparently to try to make the overweight he was putting up seem smaller. But Oliver’s ruse was rumbled, and he was hauled before the stewards.

Among the highlights of the afternoon’s racing were top-weight Tamasou’s half-length victory over The Big Haerth for Lichfield trainer, Ed McMahon, in the seven-furlong handicap, and odds-on Transfer’s smooth win in a 1m 2f contest.

Front-running Wild Desert and Cathy Gannon seemed to have the 1m 7f handicap in the bag

until Jamie Goldstein forced 20-1 shot Riptide up on the line to score by a neck.

The next race meeting at Warwick is on July 1.
