SILHILLIAN short-track speed skater Jon Eley missed out on a chance to claim a medal at the Vancouver Winter Olympics after being pipped in the semi-finals.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, and carrying the burden of being Britain’s last remaining medal hope, Jon finished out of the qualification places for the final.

The 25-year-old contested a B final in the 500m at the Pacific Coliseum, where he was placed sixth overall.

Jon, who used to play for Solihull Barons ice hockey team, said on his Twitter page: “Time to head home. Bit gutted (it’s) not with a medal but (it’s) been one hell of a journey. Thanks for all the support and messages - it was fantastic!”
