A total of 21 high performance Team Mercia swimmers aged 15 and above made the journey to Corby’s 50m International pool to compete in the Midland Youth Championships.
Formed last year, Team Mercia provides additional training and competitive opportunities to the most talented swimmers from participating clubs: Blythe Barracudas, Kingsbury Aquarius, Leamington Spa, Nuneaton and Bedworth and Stratford Sharks.
Having trained together as Team Mercia for several months under the tutelage of Head Coach Terry Freeman, this group of dedicated swimmers met the rigorous qualifying standards necessary to compete at this prestigious meet.
During the weekend the 15/16 year old age group saw 60 entrants in the ladies’ 200m freestyle event. Team Mercia’s strongest swim came from Lucy Castle. Ahead in her heat by half a body length, she finished 16th overall.
Team mates Ellen Stone, Sarah King and Ruby O’Brien all finished the event within less than quarter of a second of each other, with 15 year old Ruby achieving a long course personal best (pb).
In the ladies 100m freestyle event, 18 year old Siobhan Casey achieved fourth to secure a place in the final, where, despite swimming almost a second faster than in her heat, she again finished in fourth place.
