Zenith Cycling Club hosted the Nigel Measom Memorial Race over the May Day weekend, with Balsall Common cyclist Matt Clinton seeing a mixed round of racing.
There were to be three stages, the first of which was the Individual Prologue Time Trial, which was set over 2.7 miles.
Starting in the middle of the field, Clinton’s ability shone, climbing through the field to finish top of the pile, 11 seconds ahead of his closest challenger to give him the Yellow Jersey.
The second race covered 67 miles, and with the earlier time trial clearly affecting him Clinton could only watch as the pack opened up mid-way through the race. The final laps saw some intense sprinting, yet Clinton could not catch up with the leaders, leaving him 63 seconds behind the winner by the end of the second stage.
Clinton needed to close a 52 second deficit to claim the overall win in the final stage. The field split early and Clinton seized his opportunity to push forward, yet could not take the lead, eventually finishing sixth in the stage, leaving him tenth overall in the series.
Matt will now look forward to the West Midlands Championships, hoping to come away on top.
