Rosie Donnaghey marked her debut kickboxing competition with a fine win as she was crowned the Solihull Open Champion.

In her first-ever contest, the 11-year-old, from Moseley, strolled to success to comfortably win her category.

After her victory at Tudor Grange Leisure Centre, the St Bernard’s Primary School pupil said: “I was nervous but excited about the fight. I am so happy I won.”

The talented youngster has only been training for two years but has come on leaps and bounds in recent times.

Callum Hawthorne (black belt 2nd dan) is her instructor at Rigs Fitness and he reckons she’s set for an exciting future in the sport.

“She went in there with an open mind and it was all about her gaining experience over anything else,” he said.

“But to win the tournament as well was a fantastic achievement. I am so proud of Rosie for having the courage to enter and compete in her first tournament. That alone would have been enough for me.

“She truly fought her heart out and fully deserved the win.”

Fighters from all over the country attended and they were matched up according to age, height and weight.

For the technically gifted Rosie, her next aim is the National Championships at the end of the year.
