Municipal's annual championship produces plenty of thrills

The first day of the Solihull Municipal Bowls Club Annual Championships got under way on Saturday at Brick Kiln Lane

The first day of the Solihull Municipal Bowls Club Annual Championships got under way on Saturday at Brick Kiln Lane.

The weather was beautiful and the capacity crowd were expecting some great sport. They were not disappointed!

The morning session opened with the Open Over 65s Singles 4 Woods Plate, with Margaret Richards taking on John Hanmore. Margaret started strongly, taking a 7-5 lead after 7 ends and extending the lead to 14-9 after 14 ends. John consistently found the jack but each time Margaret expertly wrested his wood or moved it with well measured weight to win by 21 shots to 10.

In The Novice Triples, June Cooper, Pat Sheridan and skip Lynne Hughes Jones took on their husbands, Mike, Roy and Chris in a very close game in which the gents led by 7 shots to 6 after 9 ends. Then the ladies asserted their authority on the game, not allowing the boys even one more shot and taking victory by 12 shots to 7 .

On Saturday the Muni men take on hot favourites Kings Heath in the final of the W.G. Walker Trophy at Sherwood Park. Starting at 10am.
