Reading Ladies 1st XI 6 Olton Ladies 1st XI 0
OLTON were always going to have a difficult encounter against a club which fielded a 16-player squad comprising 15 international players at England/GB levels.
Despite starting brightly Olton found themselves a goal down after just five minutes when Jo Ellis converted a half-chance which the Olton keeper got a touch on, but couldn’t keep out of the net. Olton then had a good passage of play but were unable to capitalise on it before Reading began to assert themselves.
On 21 minutes Helen Richardson scored a great solo goal, taking the ball from half-way to circle and then nailing a shot which gave the Olton keeper no chance whatsoever.
Eight minutes later Alex Danson extended the lead to 3-0, deflecting a well-worked short corner into the net; and with two minutes of the half remaining Helen Richardson drove a ball hard across the goal-mouth which an Olton defender - fending off Alex Danson again - could only deflect into the net.
With the result effectively sealed the second half didn’t have the same intensity and, although Olton gave a good account of themselves with some robust defending and as attacking a style of play as was possible, they were unable to convert the chances they had into goals.
Reading scored two more, through Jo Ellis and Alex Danson, to run out with a 6-0 win.
