Birmingham University 4 Olton Ladies 1
IT’S possible that the strain of playing the last few hard games with a depleted squad may have caught up with Olton Ladies as they struggled to get into this premier league game.
Birmingham took the lead after 10 minutes and doubled their score four minutes later.
Olton worked hard but were unable to make their possession count and were weakened when Fiona Davies picked up an injury which left her struggling for the rest of the game and Olton effectively down to 11 players.
Olton responded with a goal 11 minutes into the second half when Emma McCabe hammered the ball into the net from a really acute angle, sparking hopes of a comeback.
This was short-lived, however, and as the Olton Ladies tired, Birmingham scored twice more on 57 and 64 minutes to clinch a vital win in their fight to avoid relegation.
This leaves Olton with one game left, against Leicester at Grange Road this Saturday.
The Ladies 2nd XI drew with Lichfield who were one point behind them and gained promotion back to the Midlands Premier League.
This was the second promotion of the weekend following the Men’s 5th XI who have now made it twice in two years.
Meanwhile in the EHL Northern Conference Olton men were rampant in their final home game of the season with a 5-1 routing of new boys Preston.
