University of Birmingham 4 Olton &WW 0
THIS was a match with the potential to give Olton breathing space, clear of relegation in the Investec Ladies Premier League, however it was not to be.
Despite some good build up, Olton lacked their usual forward momentum and this was exploited by the students who scored two goals in open play in the first half.
Olton put up more of a fight in the second half but it still wasn’t enough. Unable to capitalise from several short corners, Olton were back on the defensive.
For Olton it is time to reflect, and to look forward to Saturday’s fixture away against Surbiton where they will have the chance to show that they are better than this week’s performance.
Olton & WW 1 Khalsa 2
Last season’s Midlands Premier League champions, Khalsa travelled to Grange Road to take on Olton for the first time since the Ostriches were promoted to the North Conference division in 2010. This was a crucial game with only two points separating the two local sides.
The home side managed to turn early dominance into a 1-0 lead, with Tom Mallett on the end of a well worked team goal.
It looked as though Olton had managed to extend their lead only minutes later, but a penalty corner strike was judged to have been too high.
Khalsa started the second half with more intensity and drew level early on. This boosted the away side and they managed to convert another, taking advantage of Olton being down to ten men.
Next week the Ostriches face Doncaster at home in the final league match of 2012.
