After an excellent series of hill climb events for Matt Clinton,( www.mikevaughancycles.co.uk ) the 2009 National Championship jersey was not to be his when Cevelo Test Team Professional Dan Fleeman showed he had the legs on the day.
The event, staged by the Thurcroft CC up the gruelling 1,200 metre Pea Royd Lane, out of the back of Stocksbridge, Sheffield fielded an entry of 150 competitors including veterans, women, under 14’s and open.
18 year-old Mike Cuming (Raleigh Avanti) was the first rider inside four minutes, with 3-47.5 before Fleeman recorded a stunning 3-17.8.
It just remained for Balsall Common’s Clinton to defend his title but a six seconds deficit on Fleeman as he passed half way was not to be reduced over the last 600 yards as he clocked 3-31.6 to finish second.
“I was over geared, 42x20, too big. I did my best, I’ll go for it again next year,” said Clinton.
