A really tight finish at the Men’s Open Par 3 Championship at Nailcote Hall last Sunday saw 19-year-old Ross Popescu hold off the challenge of Londoner Stephen Wickham and Turkish entrant Ergul Sahin.
With an 18 holes score of 56 just 2 over par Ross finished two shots ahead of Wickham whose back nine round of 26 was the only sub par round of the day. Sahin was consistent all day with a final score of 59, one shot further back.
The winner, who first played the course at Nailcote 10 years ago as a nine-year-old in the ‘Wee Wonders’ competition, now looks forward to two days play at the Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship on August 10-11.
“To have the chance to play with top pros like Tony Jacklin in front of the TV cameras, celebrities and a large crowd is daunting, but I am really thrilled and can’t wait for August to come!” said Ross.
Nailcote’s owner, Rick Cressman added: “Ross is the last player to qualify and he is in good company with three other low handicap qualifiers who have made it into the event. Hopefully he will have a great time mixing with all the stars this year.”
The Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship runs from August 9-12, for more information and tickets call 02476 466174 or visit www.britishpar3.com.
