Shape for the Alexandra Stadium

Britain’s biggest family holiday company is coming to the Midlands for a sporting extravaganza aimed at pre-school children.

Britain’s biggest family holiday company is coming to the Midlands for a sporting extravaganza aimed at pre-school children.

Haven Holidays, which operates 36 holiday parks around the coast, is taking its lively and popular brand of sports and leisure activities to youngsters as part of a campaign to give away sports equipment.

The company, voted UK holiday operator of the year for 2008, is shrugging off the economic doom and gloom by giving away the equipment to nurseries and playgroups for free.

And as part of the Fun & Fitness scheme, Haven’s loveable children’s characters Rory the Tiger and Anxious the Elephant are packing their bags and going on the road to deliver exciting toddler and pre-school activity sessions at a number of top sports venues around the country.

The Midlands event is on February 4th at the Alexander Stadium, Birmingham - and it’s free!

Parents are invited to drop in with their young children any time between 10.30am and 2.30pm when the youngsters can join in lively activity sessions or watch inspiring gymnastic demonstrations by two of Britain’s young hopes for the 2012 Olympics.

The Fun and Fitness scheme is being spearheaded by British champion Rhythmic Gymnasts Francesca Jones and Keziah Gore who’ll both be taking part in the Birmingham event. Both girls, who are still in their teens themselves, started training at a young age and are keen to encourage other youngsters to get the exercise habit early.

Playgroup and nursery leaders have been sent invitations to register for the free sports equipment via a website

And the more support from parents the leaders can get by asking them also to register on the website, the greater chance the group will have of receiving a chest of equipment including reaction balls, Frisbees, space hoppers, a parachute for floor games and bean bags.

Naomi Woodstock of Haven Holidays said: “Invited pre-school groups will have the opportunity to register online during January. Once they have secured a place on the scheme (and it’s on a first come first served basis so pre-school leaders will need to be register quickly!) parents will need to pledge their support to make sure their children’s can benefit from equipment.

“It’s a very simple. There’s no need to collect vouchers, or make any purchase – all parents have to do is click on the website, find their children’s pre-school and pledge their support. What’s more, if ALL the parents in participating schools pledge their support the pre-school group will qualify for an additional bonus – such as a mini-trampoline, folding goal or exercise mat.”

Haven offer all sorts of great activities for youngsters from swimming, football and fencing to golf, tennis and even archery. Its ‘Wake and Shake’ sessions, launched in 2008, have also proved hugely popular with under-5’s.

Naomi added: “We’re keen to extend the Wake and Shake activity outside the holiday parks and help encourage little ones that exercise can be fun. Playgroups have to meet quite stringent requirements regarding sport and exercise but receive little or no funding to help them meet their targets. It’s not easy having to rely on fund-raising and donations - which is why we believe this age group truly deserves our support.”
