SOLIHULL’S Scott Faulkner ventured into Wales for the fourth round of the 2013 BTRDA Rally Championship based at Welshpool.
After preparing the pacenotes with co-driver Dom Adams, Faulkner knew the rally would be an eye-opener as the roads were in great condition and maximum commitment would be required from the start.
The event got underway on Saturday morning with an 11 mile stage through Gartheiniog. Again Scott and Dom had a steady run, with no dramas but dropping a large amount of time to the regulars in the Group N class.
Heading into SS2 Scott got back into the rhythm finishing 21st overall and 5th in Group N.
As with SS1, Scott took SS3 steady dropping to 24th overall, fearing a lack of power could be down to a worn-out turbo.
“The turbo has done a fair few events with us now; I think it might be time to change it after this event,” he said.
Scott was now chasing regular Wug Utting for 5th placed in Group N class, however he dropped seven seconds leaving a nine second gap overall.
With nothing to be gained through the final stage of the rally, the short 0.8 mile blast through Mick Jones’ Woodyard, it would come down to SS5 – another run through the Gartheiniog test, used as SS1.
Managing to shave 14 seconds off his first run, Scott completed the second Gartheiniog test in 11 minutes exactly. Unfortunately Wug was faster to widen the gap to 15 seconds and Scott had to settle for 6th place in Group N.
Scott and Dom now have to decide whether or not to compete on the next round of the championship, the Dukeries Rally in Sherwood Forest on June 8. They have to choose one event to miss out and with the car needing a new turbo could the Nicky Grist stages on July 13. instead.
