TRACK racing novice David Rutherford found the boards of the Newport Velodrome had a silver lining at the League of Veteran Racing Cyclists Track Championships.
On Saturday, the Solihull CC rider, in his first track championships with clubmate Ivor Thomas, just missed out on the 60+ bronze medal by half a wheel in the run off against Midland’s rider Nick Selibas, from Birmingham CC.
However he made up for this disappointment on the Sunday morning by taking the silver medal in the Individual 2K pursuit race, losing to Graham Truelove of Lichfield CC, and then taking another silver in the afternoon in the 40 lap Scratch Race behind Geoff Brandt, of Birkenhead North End CC, who took four of the 60+ golds over the two days.
At a very wet and windy Leicester on Sunday the National Inter-Area Cyclo-Cross Championships took place. In this event, riders ride for their region and each team has their points added together to find the best team in each category. In the youth event Joe Fox, of Solihull CC was part of the West Midlands ‘A’ Team and Jack Ravenscroft was a member of the ‘B’ Team.
Jacob James of Halesowen A & CC got the ‘A’ Team off to a good start but began to tire as Sam Lowe of East Midlands and Hugo Robinson of Eastern forged ahead. Joe Fox, who had started slowly, surged through the field to third but couldn’t bridge the gap to the front two. His placing, however, helped the team to secure third overall behind Yorkshire and East Midlands.
In the same race Jack Ravenscroft rode superbly for the ‘B’ team to be the first U14 rider home by a big margin but his team didn’t feature in the final results so Jack got nothing for his efforts apart from the satisfaction of a job well done.
Becki Keogh, also of Solihull CC, was riding for the ladies but her team didn’t feature in the top placings.
