BADMINTON players from Solihull and Shirley were in action at the Badminton England Cup at Milton Keynes, which sees the top English clubs battling it out for a chance to go on and play at the European Championships.
The local team arrived to face Eltham Green the outfit seeded as favourites and who went on to be the eventual winners of the Cup.
Despite this Solihull’s Mary Le Druillenec put in a strong performance against ex-national champion Tracey Hallam.
Meanwhile te club’s John Hudson and Tom Burton held their nerve to take a tense mens doubles victory and the only victory of the match 18-21 21-17 21-17.
With the competition being played in a round robin format, the team still had everything to play for in their next two matches. The team’s performance was stronger than the scoreline suggested against Top Flight which saw Solihull and Shirley lose 6-3 overall.
Chris Tonks, the head coach at the Solihull and Shirley Performance Centre won an impressive singles (22-20, 19-21, 19-21) against former Chinese Junior International, Yuehang Wan in an hour long gruelling battle.
Chris then went on to secure a hat trick of wins by partnering Chris Raw and Claire Millward in the subsequent mens and mixed doubles.
Solihull’s last and final group match was against Leighway on the Sunday with the team putting in a convincing performance to win the match 6-3.
Notable performances came from Helen Richmond and Helen Fulker in the second ladies doubles enabling Solihull to finish third in the group.
In the battle for overall ranking the squad then faced their equivalent team in the other group (Sheffield Brunswick) unfortunately losing to finish sixth overall, the highest placed club from the Midlands.
