SOLIHULL racing driver Nick Yelloly took a dominant win last weekend in the opening round of the Formula Renault 3.5 Series at MotorlandAragon; leading from the first corner to the chequered flag.
The MSA Team UK competitor was driving off the back of a successful pre-season test at the circuit, where he had recorded the fifth fastest time during the two-day session.
With one of the most competitive fields Formula Renault 3.5 has ever seen, qualifying was a tightly contested affair with the top ten changing constantly throughout the session, and with less than one second covering them. In the closing moments Yelloly put in a flying lap and secured P2 on the race grid.
Yelloly made a lightning start, taking the lead and despite the safety car being on the track, Yelloly opened up a healthy lead of two seconds and kept control of the race, taking the flag one-and-a-half seconds ahead of second placed Bianchi. On the Sunday morning, after the team had made some changes to the car, Yelloly headed out for qualifying but only managed 13th. He made a good start and was looking to move up the field when the steering on the car in front broke resulting in Yelloly clipping the car, causing a puncture in one of his tyres. After a tyre change he rejoined the track but was at the back of the pack and one lap down on the leaders. Despite being out of points contention, he and the team were able to collect some useful data and completed the full race distance.
