SOLIHULL Cycling Club is celebrating the achievements of its three U16 girls after they secured selection to the UK Inter-Area team championships this weekend.
Lucy Shaw, Natalie Clements and Sophie Faulkener have dominated the opening road races of the youth season to claim three of the four berths in the West Midlands team.
At the recent Solihull Sprint Series opening round, the girls claimed a 1-2 in the first race which saw Shaw power home in the sprint finish with Faulkener second.
But the best was saved for the second race, when the girls gave the crowd a textbook display of teamwork as they tore apart a quality field. With eight laps to go, their strategy of tearing off the front caught the rest of the field by surprise, Natalie Clements claiming the victory.
Their success, combined with their fellow U16 team mate Danni Khan’s selection for the Team GB Olympic Youth Development Programme, has encouraged more girls to come through and take up the sport.
