TEENAGER Liam Gately scooped the player-of-the-month award for June after a series of fine performances for Olton & WW.
The 16-year-old has progressed massively over the past two seasons and has firmly established his place as wicket-keeper in the Birmingham & District Division Three side.
Olton are hoping that 2009 will be the year they finally gain promotion to Division Two after narrowly missing out last time around.
Gately’s displays have helped the Grange Road side up to third place in the division, just seven points off promotion and only 16 points away from the top spot.
Throughout the three matches in June, the recent school-leaver recorded six catches and three stumpings as Olton picked up two wins and suffered one defeat.
Club spokesman Phil Williams said that Gateley is fully worthy of the award due to his efforts and determination over the past few years.
“Liam has averaged at three victims a match which is an impressive total,” he said.
“It’s difficult to compare with a batsman or bowler, but wicketkeepers are often overlooked, and I think he deserves to be player-of-the-month.
“He has now played two seasons in our first XI, played county U13s and upwards, Midlands U15s and is in the county U16 side.”
The youngster was presented with his trophy and a £50 retail voucher by Kevin Johns from Prime Chartered Accountants.
