EVERGREEN veteran David ‘Rusty’ Rutherford stormed to victory for Solihull Cycling Club in the Stourbridge CC Vets race over 40 miles last weekend.
Racing in the 60+ category, Rutherford jumped after Tony Taylor of Team Jewson just after the end of the neutralized zone. The pair soon opened a gap on the field that was never closed, Rutherford clinching the win and the two finished two minutes ahead of the chasers and four minutes clear of the pack.
Showing his versatility, Rutherford then came equal second in the Warwickshire RC evening 10 mile TT behind former Shirley Roads CC star Scott Povey, now of Team i-ride who took the win with a super 21-54. Rutherford clocked 23:19 with fellow Solihull rider Colin Williamson a close third.
Meanwhile the club’s Youth Squad were based in and around Blackpool for the Whit Bank Holiday weekend at the National Series Tour Of The North West.
In terrible conditions with very strong winds and heavy rain, the Under 12s were lead by Matt Shaw who came joint 8th in the road stage.
Lucy Shaw came home 15th in a group of 76 riders in the combined U14 and U16 race against highly competitive squads from teams in Belgium and the Czech Republic.
The Solihull CC team suffered throughout a weekend of crashes but still managed to line up for the road stage on Bank Holiday Monday.
