After the disappointment of losing the Walker Cup to Somerset, Warwickshire picked themselves up and showed their strength by winning the subsequent friendly match held at Stratford BC 110-90.

Highest winning rink was Elaine Taylor with Di Medhurst (Stoke), Pat Humpage and Ruth Phillips (both Bournville) who streaked ahead of their opponents and were 14-4 up at ten ends.

And they weren’t going to stop there, either, as they carried on in the same vein to finish 26-10.

Moira Parsons (Welford) with Christine Harding (Rugby Thornfield), Gloria Higgins (Leamington Spa) and Pat Bax (Rugby Ladies) steadily worked towards a 26-12 lead.

Liz Chedgzoy with Betty Beese, Linda Linney (all Stratford) and Ruth Carey (Welford) were level-pegging most of the way and were 9-7 up at 14 ends but a final spurt resulted in a 20-10 finish.

Jenny Corn with Chris Ward (Lillington), Heather Mills (Grange Ladies) and Janet Greenwell (Wolvey) struggled to start and were 16-6 down at 13 ends before they came into their own and pulled back to eventually come home with a 17-16 win.

Maureen Tims (Whitnash) with Karen Rice (Entaco), Norma Willey (Three Spires) and Di Thurlbeck (Lillington) were fairly evenly placed for most of the match but two fours claimed by their opponents on the 16th and 18th ends put paid to a win and the final score was 17-14.

Maureen Edwards with Sigrid Thomas (both Rugby Thornfield), Ann Doherty (Lillington) and Carol Norton (Stoke) weren’t so fortunate and faced fierce opposition resulting in a 25-7 loss.

* Warwickshire’s trip to Chester Road BC, Kidderminster, resulted in a three-shot loss for the visitors 108-105, but, as always, Worcestershire made up for it with their hospitality. Highest winning rink went to Janet Scott (Sherwood Park) with Joy Cooke (Solihull Municipal), Hazel Goodman and Ann Doherty (both Lillington) who romped ahead at the start and were 12-5 up at ten ends and although their opponents pulled back seven shots over the last few ends, the Warwickshire team came home with a 24-13 win.

Sue Hornsby (Lillington) with Margaret Boldy (Wellesbourne), June Hands (Ilmington) and Liz Westell (Welford) started well, picking up seven shots on the third end and in spite of a determined effort by their opponents managed to hold on to a 25-18 lead.

Elaine Taylor (Stoke) skipped the only other winning rink with Chris Cooke (Southam), Antoinette Lambert and Chris Harrison (both Ambleside), who kept the score close eventually finishing 16-14.

Maureen Edwards (Rugby Thornfield) with Wendy Baxter (LMRCA), Gloria Higgins (Leamington Spa) and Hilary Smith (Wellesbourne) were 7-3 down at seven ends, but five shots on the eighth end took them into the lead and although they were denied the opportunity to score for most of the game they managed to hold on and finish with a 18-18 draw.

Marilyn Warren (Rowheath) with Barbara Harsant, Jeanette Douglas and Mo Yeomans (all Solihull Municipal) started well and were 10-2 up at seven ends but once their opponents found the green they weren’t allowed to score again until the 16th end and eventually finished 14-29.

Jenny Corn (Lillington) with Di Green (Sherwood Park), Chris Roberts and Carol Norton (Stoke) found the going tough and were never given an opportunity to score more than one shot resulting in an 27-8 defeat.

County President Maureen Edwards was delighted to finish the day by presenting Wendy Baxter with her Blazer Badge.
