Solihull School has crowned a triple championship winning season on the hockey field by beating the best at the prestigious Under 19 Bath Festival.
The Senior Boys at the co-educational School in Warwick Road notched up 12 goals in their four games after overcoming top sports school Millfield 4-0, Haberdashers’ Aske’s 4-1 and Monkton Combe 3-0. Solihull drew their other match against Victoria College 1-1.
The School’s success followed a sensational season
in which the Boys finished as Warwickshire Champions and regional semi-finalists in the National Schools Cup,
and the First XI Girls team won the West Midlands
The Boys beat the likes of Rugby School, King Edward’s Birmingham and Newcastle-under-Lyme School, with 12-goal Jon Coleman who also played National League Hockey for Olton and West Warwickshire First XI leading the individual successes. The First XI Girls gained their championship glory with notable wins against Princethorpe College, Bablake, Wolverhampton High School and KES Birmingham, while in the Junior School the Under 11 Boys clinched the Warwickshire title.
European success has also come Solihull School’s way both at student and teacher level with 16-year-old Julie Whiting winning selection for the Wales Under 18 squad for the European Under 18 Championships in Prague in July.
History teacher Hannah Smith, a former England Under 21 international who plays for 2011 National League Champions Leicester, is off to the Netherlands this Easter to play qualifying matches for the European Cup Finals in June.
