THEY start young at Solihull Cycling Club and over the Bank Holiday weekend super ten-year-old Matt Shaw took the yellow jersey when he won a national three day bike race.
Seven riders from the club’s junior team took part in the North West Youth Tour 2010, part of British Cycling’s National Youth Series.
Shaw finished fifth in the first of five events then won the second later on the same day ensuring he ended Saturday in yellow.
Day two started with disaster as Shaw crashed on the third stage but unscathed, in the afternoon he went on to put in a fine performance for the fourth stage, picking up time bonuses along the way ending the day still in yellow by nine seconds.
On Bank Holiday Monday a finale sprint event saw young Matt defend his jersey like a seasoned professional, finishing third to secure the overall title as the top Under 10 rider in a class field.
The Under 16 competition in the same event attracted a world class field of 91 international riders. Solihull CC’s Joe Fox came an impressive 12th place in the first event and 24th overall gaining invaluable experience.
Also over the Bank Holiday, two other stars of Solihull CC’s youth team travelled to South Wales to compete in British Cycling’s National Cross Country Series.
In the U14 mountain bike event Jack Ravenscroft blasted into the lead and despite a last lap puncture still held on to take second place.
