B’ham Solihull 18 Bromsgrove 18
BEES travel into the wilds of Herefordshire on Saturday to face Old Luctonians, the team of their former enforcer Alex Davidson.
Davidson used to put steel into the backbone of the Bees pack although fans will also remember that his habit of collecting yellow cards made him at times a liability.
In all it promises to be a humdinger.
Last Saturday the lads from the Portway salvaged a draw against a Bromsgrove side they looked well capable of beating, especially at nine nil up and with a dominant scrum.
However they hadn’t reckoned with the speedy backs of the Finstall Park outfit who hit back through winger Charlie Jones and the boot of fly half Bar Bartlett.
Yellow cards for prop Matt Long and hooker Will Radburn didn’t help either, not did a forwards try against the depleted men in black.
Lucky then for the boot of scrum half Jack Jolly who kicked all the Bees’ points including a last minute penalty that tied the game.
Of particular concern will be the manner in which the pack lost their way when they were bossing the Bromsgrove eight.
Further back along the spine, key decisions weren’t being taken at nine or ten or in the centre to clear the lines as the visitors laid siege in the B&S 22.
Granted the conditions were appalling and they’re a young inexperienced side, as Long acknowledged at the final whistle: “At times we didn’t do ourselves any favours but we are coming together and getting better each week,” he said.
